Dreaming

Dreaming — the defrag of the brain. All the little pieces of new information are randomly paired with old memories as they fit, creating empty space and allowing for a fresh start the next morning. This would explain why we go seamlessly from one situation to another in dreams: You are a 12 year old in your hometown in Bregenz, Austria, and wind up a minute later in Caracas where you meet your aunt who died last year. This also explains why we go nuts when we don’t sleep — no defragmentation for too long.
